The inside story on the ned

Gareth Banner, managing director of The Ned, introduces Soho House and Sydell Group’s flagship new opening in the City of London

“The Ned is a historic, Grade I-listed building in the heart of the City of London. It was designed in the 1920s as the global headquarters for Midland Bank. The architect, Edwin Lutyens (his close friends called him Ned), wanted the building to ooze confidence and cut a flourish amid the mostly Victorian architecture.

“For the first time, Soho House and the Sydell Group are joining forces in order to give the building a new lease of life as a hotel, collection of restaurants and social and fitness club. The Ned will open in spring 2017 and will differ from our other properties, mainly due to its size. The site has 320,000 square feet of space over 12 floors and a rooftop. It has nine restaurants – including eight public restaurants in the former banking hall on the ground floor – plus a late-night lounge housed within the original vault, and a whole floor dedicated to private hire and meeting space.

“The Ned has the wow factor, and the outstanding architecture is so well preserved you can’t help but fall in love with it. Nick Jones did in 2012, when he was shown the building for the first time. It’s also with love that the design team – led by Adam Greco and Alice Lund – have been restoring the building to the glamour of its 1930s heyday. Their scheme brings The Ned’s rich history to life, with brass and mahogany furniture, antique chandeliers and richly patterned fabrics decorating the hotel’s 252 guest rooms and suites.

“Recruitment is another crucial task. The hotel is assembling a team of 800 staff, including people in a wide range of specialist positions. We need nail technicians, production managers and people in guest relations. All Ned employees will have the opportunity to learn and grow, with a wide range of training and courses.

“The Ned will be the biggest hotel opening of the decade, making it internationally famous. This is a chance to create a true legacy in London.”
