The public voted the coco colada, created by UK bars manager Erdem Kayalar, their favourite drink at the main event on the speciality coffee calendar
You might think that pina colada made with coffee wouldn’t work as a drink, but visitors to the 2018 London Coffee Festival disagreed. In a competition at La Marzocco’s True Artisan Café, they voted the Coco Colada served by Soho House to be their favourite signature drink.
The Soho House team operated a three-hour takeover of the La Marzocco stand, serving up great speciality coffee as well as the frozen drink – a blend of coconut, fresh pineapple juice, Bacardi rum, Angostura bitters, Sandows cold brew and Origin espresso.
“We started with a blank piece of paper,” says Erdem Kayalar, who came up with the drink. “Our coffee is really nice, our pina colada spec is good, so we tried to come up with a way to combine the two. We first used cold-brew coffee and then added espresso for the texture and bitterness.”
Batched up by Matteo Battistello, bars manager of 76 Dean Street, and served by David Robson, coffee operations manager and Coco Deeb, coffee QC manager, the Coco Colada was a huge hit with coffee lovers at the festival.
“The London Coffee Festival is the pinnacle of the coffee calendar, and this win confirms our place in the speciality coffee community,” Coco says. “It’s great to be rewarded for all the efforts that the team have put in to serving outstanding coffee.”
The coffee and cocktail teams also enjoyed working together, she adds. “The coco colada was a real collaboration, Erdem and Matteo worked so hard and we’re beyond thrilled to have won.”
