Paolo Lazzarich, barman at Pizza East Shoreditch, has set a world record by making a Negroni at Everest base camp
Previously in House Four we reported that Paolo Lazzarich, bartender at Pizza East Shoreditch, was travelling to Nepal in an attempt to break the world record for making a cocktail at the highest altitude on Earth.
And, on the morning of October 23 2016, he achieved his goal. He mixed a negroni at Kala Patthar, a peak adjacent to Everest that is 5,643 metres above sea level. To reach the mountain, Paolo had trekked for two weeks through the high passes of the Himalayas.
“I felt a mix of emotions,” he says. “I set a new record for the highest cocktail ever mixed, but also – in going to the Himalayas – I achieved something I’ve been dreaming about since I was a teenager.”
Paolo had organised the trip as a fiftieth birthday present to himself, and added the negroni challenge as a “touch of sparkle”.
