Land of the free thinkers

To celebrate Independence Day, we focus on the creativity of Soho House people in the US

1 Nava: Dancing around the House

Deyone Cunningham, pictured, has been dancing professionally for the past few years alongside his job as a line chef at Nava in West Hollywood. “What I like about working for Soho House is that people are so strongly motivated,” says Deyone, who usually heads straight to rehearsal after work. “We’re here to help each other and see everyone succeed. Soho House has allowed me to explore my talent.”

2 Ludlow: A new take on meat-free

Daniel Mezzolo recently moved from Soho House Toronto to take on the head chef role at Ludlow House, and has added several delicious vegetarian and vegan plates to the menu, such as House-made beetroot gnocchi with taleggio cheese velouté, and wood oven-roasted cauliflower with pistachio cream. “They’ve already proved to be really popular dishes,” says Daniel.

3 Miami: Beyond chef’s whites

Wanting something practical but stylish to wear while cooking, Didiana Vallejo, a sous chef at Soho Beach House Miami, is developing a clothing line for chefs.

4 Chicago: Sculpting man

Mark Umstattd, a new club bartender at Soho House Chicago, has skills besides mixing a mean martini: he’s also a trained sculptor who has been involved in woodwork at Burning Man festival, where a huge sculpture is built and then torched in the Nevada desert. We can’t wait to see his take on cocktail garnish.

The Allis: Stacks of brunch ideas

In-house baker Ehsan Ganji created an Instagram stunner with the “Allis Tower” – a three-tiered brunch stack of hot-smoked salmon, lox, whitefish salad, tomato, pickled cucumber, onion, capers and cream cheese that’s served with  a small skyscraper of bagels on the side.

6 West Hollywood: Woke accessories

Alexandra Possenti, events production manager at Soho House West Hollywood, has just launched an accessories line, Yanomami. Alex’s bohemian designs are made by the Waraos, an indigenous group to her home country of Venezuela, and part of the proceeds will be donated to stop deforestation in the Amazon (yanomami.us).

7 Toronto: An art film star

Ally Pratt, bartender at Soho House Toronto, starred in a short film that made it into the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

8 Ludlow: Rhymes from the block

Ludlow House chef Dylan Golden has recently released a rap album. To hear and download Dylan’s record, and see a video of him in action, visit dylangolden.com

9 LA: Sounds good

Hip-hop virtuoso Anderson .Paak was the headliner at the very first Soho Sounds in February. The new music series began with his performance in Downtown LA. More events are planned for other cities this year.

10 Miami: Artistic vision

Juan Carlos Estrada, a bellman at Soho Beach House, has loved drawing for as long as he can recall. As a way of expressing his identity, JC created a logo featuring an eye on a hand, which he uses to embellish hats. Asked how to find inspiration, he says: “Art just has to come to you, you can never force it. Art is like love.”
